With the Brazil Carnival round the corner and Rio de Janeiro in full swings, the sex industry in the city expects thousands of tourists during the Carnival festivities. But the government seems cynical about the spreading of STDs and AIDS.

In order to impede any transmission of diseases, the government initiated its annually safe-sex campaign and the distribution of free condoms. The campaign is a part of Brazil’s AIDS prevention program, which also offers free medicine for patients and costs the government 1.4 billion reais ($663.8 million) a year.

The government plans to distribute 10 million free condoms and citing the carnival, around 15 million have already been sent to states in January. A massive campaign has in progress on the radio and television with the official slogan “With condoms, the good feeling goes on after the party is over.”

However, Catholic bishops have criticized the campaign, saying the installation of condom machines in public schools would cast bad impact on our society. Notably, the carnival will begin on Saturday and celebrations continue for five days, millions of tourists flock Brazil during carnival.
