To buy treatments for AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria afflicted people all over the world; new taxes are being levied on the passengers’ tickets who are willing to board planes in France. The tax, championed by President Jacques Chirac and supported by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, is included with a surcharge of between 1 and 40 euros, based upon the destination and class of seat.
Many of the countries — Brazil, Chile, Cyprus, Congo, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Mauritius, Nicaragua and Norway - have given their agreement by signing on to the initiative, while the United States, Canada and Germany, though, have contrasted to the levy. On the other hand, a number of airlines have opposed that this is simply going to inflate the cost of air travel at a time of high fuel.
