Taktsang Dzong, widely known as Tiger’s Nest Monastery among travelers, is located several hours outside of Paro, Bhutan. It hangs on a hard cliff at 3,120 meters (10,200 feet), some 700 meters (2,300 feet) above the bottom of Paro valley. The folktale regarding Tigers Nest is that Guru Rimpoche (Rim’-poh-shay) landed there on the back of a flying tiger in the 8th century and brought Buddhism from Tibet to Bhutan.

The monastery includes seven temples which can all be visited. But several years back the monastery came under a massive conflagration and much burned to the ground. However, the renovation endeavor has been immense so that this national symbol can regain is past glory. Climbing to the monastery is on foot or mule but tourists not being allowed in (or even very close to) the building.
