The US government seeks help of travel agents in background checks on travelers coming to the US. These checks would be imposed on those travelers who do not need visas to enter the US. The proposal came after the US government’s announcement to strengthen the security for those who are part of its visa waiver program.
Michael Bott, President of the Council for Civil Liberties said:
Travel agents should not have to act as snoops suggesting adequate security measures are already in place.
However, the proposal has been spurned by agents, countering their views that it will adversely affect their business and will taint their image.
John McGuiness, Flight Centre spokesman said:
Such a move will not be welcomed by the travel industry and that security measures for traveling to the US may instead act as a deterrent to travelers.
